# Invoices and tax

Stripe takes the payment and issues the invoice. Overlane never sees or stores a card: checkout and the billing portal are Stripe-hosted pages, and Overlane keeps only the plan, the seats and the amounts.

## What an invoice carries

- the plan charge for the period, at the seats you had;
- prorations for any seat or plan change during the period;
- usage beyond your allowances from the previous period, billed in arrears.

An invoice that has closed never changes. Late usage goes on the next one. Replayed or reordered Stripe messages cannot create a second charge: each payment is recorded once per invoice.

## Tax

Stripe Tax is on for every checkout. You enter a billing address and, if you have one, a tax ID on Stripe's page, and tax is added there. The amounts on the billing screen are before tax.

## Cards and invoices

```sh
overlane billing portal
overlane billing status
```

The portal is where a person updates the card, downloads invoices and edits tax details. Only a signed-in person can open it: an agent token can read billing but cannot pay or change anything.
