# Chat approvals

An approval can be posted to a chat service and answered there. Slack shows a card with **Approve** and **Deny** buttons in a channel. Microsoft Teams shows an Adaptive Card in a channel, answered there and checked against Microsoft's signed token. Everything also works without chat: approvals are always answerable in the app and from the CLI, and nothing needs Slack or Teams connected.

## Connect a chat service

Open **Settings, Integrations, Chat approvals** and press **Connect** next to Slack or Teams. Connecting needs the right to manage policy.

| Service | What you enter |
| --- | --- |
| Slack | The Slack app's Bot User OAuth Token |
| Teams | The Azure Bot's app ID, its Microsoft Entra tenant ID and its client secret (a single-tenant app registration) |

The secret goes to your team's encrypted vault and is never shown again. The row then shows **Connected** with the secret's fingerprint, and **Disconnect** removes it. The same step from the CLI is `overlane connector connect`; see the [Slack connector](/developers/connectors/slack/).

## Who may answer

Map each person who answers to a team member, once:

```sh
overlane connector chat-user slack --external-user U0123ABCD --user USER_ID
```

An answer in chat counts only from a mapped member who may write, who is not the one who asked, and only while the approval is pending. Someone who links their own account does it with `overlane connector link`.

## Post an approval to a channel

```sh
overlane connector approval slack --approval-id APPROVAL_ID --channel CHANNEL_ID --summary "Promote 6d8e3b4 to production"
```

Command reference: [connector chat-user](/cli/connector-chat-user/), [connector approval](/cli/connector-approval/) and [connector link](/cli/connector-link/). The rule that decides what each action needs is in [the approval rule](/developers/approval-rule/).
